The Translation Course

What Is Quran Tarjuma, and Why Learn It?

Tarjuma means translation. In this course you learn what the words of the Quran mean, one word at a time, and then how they come together into the meaning of the whole verse. It is the step that turns recitation into understanding.

Many of us have read the Quran for years without knowing what we are saying, even in our five daily prayers. Learning the meaning changes that. Al-Fatiha, the short surahs and the words of salah start to speak to you, and the Quran becomes a book you understand, not only recite.

كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ

"This is a blessed Book which We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses."

Surah Sad 38:29

Who This Course Is For

Women who read the Quran but do not understand it: the most common reason sisters join. You can already read Arabic, and now you want to know what you are reading.

Mothers: understanding the Quran yourself makes it much easier to explain it to your children and answer their questions.

Teenage girls: older girls who read fluently often start asking what the verses mean. Learning the meaning at this age builds a lasting connection with the Quran.

Before you start: you should be able to read the Arabic text of the Quran. If not, begin with Noorani Qaida or Quran Reading with Tajweed first.

Our Method

How We Teach the Meaning of the Quran, Step by Step

You do not need to study Arabic grammar for years to understand the Quran. We start with the words you already say every day, and build from there.

The Words of Salah

Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, the short surahs and the words you say in every prayer, so your salah gains meaning first.

Common Quranic Words

The words that appear again and again across the Quran, learned early so you recognise them everywhere.

Root Words

Most Arabic words grow from a three-letter root. Learn one root and you can often guess the meaning of many related words.

Simple Grammar Clues

Small signs that change meaning, such as "he", "they", "we" and "you" attached to words, and past or present verbs.

Word-by-Word Through the Surahs

Juz Amma first, then longer surahs, translated word by word with your teacher.

Reading With Meaning

The goal: reading a verse and understanding its message as you go, without stopping to look up each word.

What a 30-Minute Translation Class Looks Like

First 5 minutes

A quick review of the words from the last lesson, read and translated by the student.

Next 20 minutes

New verses translated word by word, then put together into their full meaning, with the teacher explaining anything unclear.

Last 5 minutes

A short list of new words to revise, and one verse to reflect on before the next class.

A Taste of the Lessons

Al-Fatiha, Word by Word

This is how the first surah you learned looks in a translation class. Every word you say in salah, explained.

الرَّحْمَٰنِThe Most Gracious
الرَّحِيمِThe Most Merciful
مَالِكِMaster of
يَوْمِ الدِّينِthe Day of Judgement
إِيَّاكَYou alone
نَعْبُدُwe worship
وَإِيَّاكَand You alone
نَسْتَعِينُwe ask for help

Surah Al-Fatiha 1:3 to 1:5

One Root, Many Words

ع ل م

The root of knowing

The three letters ʿain, lam and meem carry the idea of knowledge. Once you know this root, a whole family of words in the Quran becomes easy to recognise. Our teachers point out roots like this as they appear, so your vocabulary grows naturally.

عِلْمknowledge
عَلِيمAll-Knowing
عَلَّمَhe taught
يَعْلَمُونَthey know

Know the Difference

Tarjuma and Tafseer: What Is the Difference?

Tarjuma (Translation)

What the words of the Quran mean. You learn the meaning of each word and each verse, so you understand what you read and recite. This course.

Tafseer (Explanation)

Why a verse was revealed, its background and the lessons scholars have drawn from it. Tafseer goes deeper, and is easier once you already know the meaning. See our courses.

FAQ

Quran Translation (Tarjuma): Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know Arabic to join?

You do not need to speak Arabic. You only need to be able to read the Arabic text of the Quran. Everything else is explained in English or Urdu.

Is the translation taught in English or Urdu?

Both. Choose the language you understand best when you book your trial, and your teacher will explain every word in that language.

What is word-by-word translation?

Each Arabic word is given its own meaning, so you can see which word means what. Then the words are put together into the full meaning of the verse.

What is the difference between Tarjuma and Tafseer?

Tarjuma tells you what the words mean. Tafseer explains the background of a verse and the lessons drawn from it. Most students learn the translation first, because Tafseer is easier once you know the meaning.

Which translation do you use?

Our teachers use reliable, widely used translations of the Quran. If your family prefers a particular translation, tell your teacher and she can follow it.

Will I understand my salah after this course?

Yes, that is one of the first goals. We start with Al-Fatiha, the short surahs and the words of salah, so your prayers gain meaning early in the course.

How long does it take to learn the translation of the Quran?

It depends on your pace and practice. Most students understand the words of salah and many short surahs within the first months. Translating the whole Quran word by word is a longer journey that you can take step by step.

Can girls and teenagers join?

Yes. Girls who read the Quran fluently can join, usually from around 10 years old. Lessons are kept simple and practical.

How much does the course cost?

The fee is $30 a month in the USA, £30 in the UK and €30 in Europe, for 20 one-on-one classes of 30 minutes each. Your first 3 trial classes are free.

How are the classes conducted?

Classes are live and one-on-one on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp. Each class is 30 minutes, and in some cases it can be extended up to 40 minutes.

What if I miss a class?

Let us know, and a make-up class can be rescheduled on your request.

What do I need to get started?

A laptop, PC, tablet or smartphone, an internet connection, and a notebook for new words.
