The Tafseer Course

What Is Tafseer, and Why Study It?

Tafseer is the explanation of the Quran. Translation tells you what the words mean. Tafseer tells you why a verse was revealed, what it meant to the first Muslims who heard it, how it connects to other verses, and what it asks of us today.

Many verses are short but carry deep meaning. Without Tafseer, it is easy to miss the context or to understand a verse in a way it was never meant. Studying it with a teacher, from trusted sources, lets the Quran guide your heart, your choices and your family life with confidence.

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

"The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it."

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ · Sahih al-Bukhari 5027

Who This Course Is For

Women who want to understand the Quran deeply: you can read the Quran, perhaps know some of its meaning, and now want to understand the message behind the verses.

Mothers: knowing the stories and lessons of the Quran helps you answer your children's questions and teach them with confidence.

Older girls and teens: the stories of the prophets and the righteous women of the Quran speak powerfully to young hearts and build strong faith.

Good to know first: you should be able to read the Quran. Knowing the basic meaning helps a lot, so many students take Quran Translation (Tarjuma) first, but it is not required.

Trusted Knowledge

Where Tafseer Comes From

Tafseer is not personal opinion. Scholars have explained the Quran using these sources, in this order of importance, and our lessons follow the same path.

The Quran Itself

One verse often explains another, so the Quran is the first source of its own meaning.

The Sunnah

The words and actions of the Prophet ﷺ, who explained the Quran to his companions.

The Companions

The Sahabah witnessed the revelation and knew its context first-hand.

The Arabic Language

The meanings of words and expressions as the Arabs understood them at the time.

Classical Scholars

Well-known works such as the Tafseer of Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari and al-Qurtubi.

Our Method

How We Study Each Verse, Layer by Layer

Every lesson follows the same clear steps, so you always know where you are and nothing important is skipped.

Recite and Translate

The verse is recited correctly and translated, so you know exactly what it says.

Context of Revelation

When and why the verse was revealed, and what was happening at the time (Asbab al-Nuzul).

The Explanation

What the scholars of Tafseer said about the verse, explained in simple English or Urdu.

Related Verses and Hadith

Other verses and authentic hadith that shed light on the same subject.

Lessons for Your Life

What the verse teaches about faith, character, worship and family, and how to act on it this week. This is where Tafseer moves from the page to the heart.

What a 30-Minute Tafseer Class Looks Like

First 5 minutes

The student recites the verses and recalls the main points from the last lesson.

Next 15 minutes

Translation, context and explanation of the new verses, with references to trusted Tafseer.

Last 10 minutes

Lessons, questions and discussion, plus one point to reflect on and practise before the next class.

A Taste of the Lessons

Surah Al-Asr: Three Verses, a Whole Way of Life

وَالْعَصْرِ (١) إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ (٢) إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ (٣)

"By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who believe, do righteous deeds, and advise each other to the truth and advise each other to patience."

Surah Al-Asr 103:1 to 103:3

What a Tafseer lesson draws out

Allah swears by time, the one thing no one can buy back, then says every person is losing it, except those with four qualities:

  1. Faith in Allah and what He revealed
  2. Righteous deeds that put that faith into action
  3. Advising each other to the truth, not keeping it to ourselves
  4. Advising each other to patience, because the path needs it

Imam ash-Shafi'i is reported to have said that if people reflected on this surah alone, it would be enough for them.

FAQ

Quran Tafseer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Tafseer and translation?

Translation tells you what the words mean. Tafseer explains the context of a verse, how scholars understood it, and the lessons it carries. Tafseer builds on translation and goes deeper.

Do I need to know Arabic or finish Tarjuma first?

You do not need to speak Arabic, but you should be able to read the Quran. Knowing the basic meaning helps, so many students take our Tarjuma course first, but you can start Tafseer directly.

Which Tafseer books do you teach from?

Our teachers use well-known, mainstream works of Tafseer, such as Ibn Kathir, and explain them in simple English or Urdu. If your family follows a particular Tafseer, tell your teacher.

Is the course taught in English or Urdu?

Both. Choose the language you understand best when you book your trial.

Can I ask my own questions in class?

Yes, and we encourage it. One-on-one classes are designed so the lesson can follow your questions. If a question needs a scholar's ruling, your teacher will tell you honestly.

Is the course suitable for girls and teenagers?

Yes. Girls usually join from around 12 years old. Lessons focus on the stories of the prophets, the women of the Quran and the surahs they pray with.

Does the course follow a particular school of thought?

Lessons stay with the mainstream understanding found in well-known works of Tafseer, and teachers avoid sectarian debate. Where scholars differ, your teacher will mention it respectfully.

How long does it take to complete the Tafseer of the Quran?

It depends on your pace and chosen focus. The Tafseer of Juz Amma or a few selected surahs can be studied in months, while the full Quran is a longer journey taken step by step.

How much does the course cost?

The fee is $30 a month in the USA, £30 in the UK and €30 in Europe, for 20 one-on-one classes of 30 minutes each. Your first 3 trial classes are free.

How are the classes conducted?

Classes are live and one-on-one on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp. Each class is 30 minutes, and in some cases it can be extended up to 40 minutes.

What if I miss a class?

Let us know, and a make-up class can be rescheduled on your request.

What do I need to get started?

A laptop, PC, tablet or smartphone, an internet connection, a Mushaf and a notebook for your Tafseer journal.

Understand the Message of the Quran, Wherever You Live
